Welcome back to Mutant Mondays, my friends.
I took a short break from writing my weekly blog entries as I MOVED to another part of Los Angeles! I also moved out of my art studio as well.
And between performing at The Broad last month, launching my podcast Your Art Is A Spell, starting a teaching gig at CalArts, and being a part of an exhibition in Paris and Los Angeles (that was named one of the 11 shows to see in February by Matt Stromberg of Hyperallergic), I’ve had very little time to update here.
But I’m back! I am excited to share about an event I participated in on Saturday. I was invited to be a part of the wildly successful and SOLD OUT event Night At The Library: Building Stories, which took place at the Los Angeles Central Library in Downtown LA. Presented by the Library Foundation of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Public Library, LAist, and the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. In association with LA Phil Insight.
I collaborated with LAist, part of Southern California Public Radio, to produce original artwork that helped create a soothing and healing environment for visitors to receive a two-card reading.
Standing in front of artwork I created for the tarot reading space
Two hours—that's how long some people waited for a two-card tarot reading from me inside the magnificent Central branch of the LA Public Library. I'm still in awe of the turnout (over 3,000 people!) and the beautiful connections made throughout the evening.
Artwork I created that was printed and installed with support from LAist.
Before starting my readings, I pulled my own cards: The Hermit (our 2025 card) and Wheel of Fortune (our upcoming 2026 card). Was the universe winking at me? Absolutely. It felt like a cosmic confirmation that I'm exactly where I'm meant to be. 🕯️🎡
A two card reading I did for myself before starting to offer readings to others. I received The Hermit and the Wheel of Fortune.
The incredible team at LAIST created a breathtaking space using my own artwork and provided flawless support throughout the event. Their attention to detail transformed the library into something truly enchanting.
Grateful to LAist for creating a beautifully lit reading space and featuring my video with "Breathe" to encourage guests to take a deep breath.
As I sat across from dozens and dozens of people offering readings, I was struck by the energy of the entire event. There was so much happening simultaneously—artist talks, performances, choirs, and workshops—all under the historic dome of the Central Library. Each person who sat across from me brought their own story, their own questions, their own energy to our brief but meaningful exchange.
I thank LAIST, the LA Public Library, Library Foundation LA, Lucas Museum, and ALOUD LA for including me in this extraordinary event. Thanks also to the brilliant artists and friends who participated—we created something special in Downtown LA last night.
This experience has me reflecting on the beautiful chaos of my career and life path. Just this past week, I've had the privilege of seeing therapy clients in my private practice, teaching a class on art and community at CalArts (where I invited my friend Madre Jaguar to lead a cacao ceremony with my students), and reading tarot for countless souls at an incredible downtown event last night while also working on several other projects. I am amazed by the multidimensional career I’ve built from my various passions and skills, with immense gratitude for the amazing communities I belong to.
My journey has never been linear—far from it. That's exactly what I explore in my new video, which I uploaded to my YouTube channel and podcast, "How I Got My Dream Job." This video is also a part of my podcast Your Art Is A Spell, a podcast about art, spirituality, and transformation. (Apple Podcasts)
In this newest episode, I share all the jobs I’ve ever had on my long, winding path to becoming who I am today. From early struggles to unexpected opportunities, each experience has been a card in my life's deck, guiding me to this moment where I can serve my community in many fulfilling ways.
Resonant Transmissions
I'm excited to share that my work has been included in "Trans Technologies," and I highly recommend attending the upcoming book event at the Los Angeles Central Library on Saturday, March 15, 2025, from 4-5 p.m. Author Oliver Haimson will be in conversation with Kai Nham in Meeting Room A, exploring the crucial intersections between trans identity and technology. As a contributor to this groundbreaking collection, I can attest to the importance of these discussions in creating more inclusive cultural spaces.
