Nierika: The Pause, The Void, The Map, 2022
An eight foot by eight foot fabric banner Nierika installed at the Institute of Contemporary Art San Francisco. As a part of the Meantime Program, series of takeovers and pop-ups occurring during renovations at 901 Minnesota Street, between January and April, in advance of ICA San Francisco’s fall 2022 opening. Curated by Renee Cyla Villasenor and Christine Koppes.
As a part of this project, Frías hosted two experiential workshops that explored the concept of the Nierika, divination, and ancestral communion. In addition to this, visitors were guided through a experience of scrying with the Nierika as well as sharing messages and visions received. The Nierika is a a ceremonial and divinatory tool of the Wixáritari people of Mexico.
This artwork is a part of Frías thesis project at UC Berkeley and an iteration of this work will be included as a part of their upcoming thesis exhibition at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive.
