On July 15th, 2016, I performed a transmutation-centered blessing on Candice Lin's A Hard White Body, 2016, a sculpture created for the Current:LA Biennial. This sculpture features 5 upside down busts of conquistadors who died of bacterial diseases. Their heads act as filters and funnel the rainwater into a tank with tea and sugar, alluding to racial, colonialist, and economic histories. This tank has another element, the bacterial starter necessary to turn this mixture into kombucha. Inspired by her project, I created an altar for her sculpture and performed a cleansing and blessing ritual. Ancestors encouraged me to listen deeply and to do the work in silence.
